Wheelbarrow Books Presents: Gabrielle Calvocoressi and Daniel Lassell

The Wheelbarrow Books Poetry Series, established in 2016, is the publishing imprint of the RCAH Center for Poetry, with publication and distribution by MSU Press

Please join us as we welcome Daniel Lassell, author of Spit, and special guest Gabrielle Calvocoressi, who selected Spit as winner of the 2020 Wheelbarrow Books Poetry Prize and author of The Last Time I Saw Amelia EarhartApocalyptic Swing (a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize), and Rocket Fantastic.

Lassell and Calvocoressi will each read from their work, then join in a conversation lightly moderated by Wheelbarrow Books Series Editor and Center for Poetry Founding Director Anita Skeen.

A reception and book signing will follow in the LookOut Gallery, 2nd floor, Snyder Hall.

Gabrielle Calvocoressi is the author of The Last Time I Saw Amelia EarhartApocalyptic Swing (a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize), and Rocket Fantastic, winner of the Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry. Calvocoressi is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including a Stegner Fellowship and Jones Lectureship from Stanford University; a Rona Jaffe Woman Writer's Award; a Lannan Foundation residency in  Marfa, TX; the Bernard F. Conners Prize from The Paris Review; and a residency from the Civitella di Ranieri Foundation, among others. Calvocoressi's poems have been published or are forthcoming in numerous magazines and journals including The Baffler, The New York TimesPOETRYBoston ReviewKenyon ReviewTin House, and The New Yorker. Calvocoressi is an Editor at Large at Los Angeles Review of Books, and Poetry Editor at Southern Cultures. Works in progress include a non-fiction book entitled, The Year I Didn't Kill Myself and a novel, The Alderman of the Graveyard. Calvocoressi was the Beatrice Shepherd Blane Fellow at the Harvard-Radcliffe Institute for 2022 - 2023. Calvocoressi teaches at UNC Chapel Hill and lives in Old East Durham, NC, where joy, compassion, and social justice are at the center of their personal and poetic practice.  

 

Daniel Lassell is the author of Spit (Wheelbarrow Books, 2021), which was selected by Gabrielle Calvocoressi as the winner of the 2020 Wheelbarrow Books Poetry Prize. Spit also won the 2022 Midwest Book Awards Poetry Debut Gold Award and the 2021 Reader Views Literary Award in Poetry, and it was shortlisted for the 2022 Eric Hoffer Book Award Grand Prize, the 2022 First Horizon Award, the 2022 Sheila Margaret Motton Book Prize, the 2021 Best Book Awards, and the 2021 International Book Awards. Lassell is also the author of two chapbooks: Ad Spot (Ethel Zine & Micro Press, 2021), which received an honorable mention for the 2022 Eric Hoffer Book Awards, and The Emptying Earth (Madhouse Press, 2023). He grew up on a farm in Kentucky and currently lives in Bloomington, Indiana.
