Alecia Beymer

Biography

Alecia Beymer is a doctoral student in Teacher Education in the College of Education at Michigan State University. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA (Go Steelers!), Alecia graduated from Chatham University in 2011 with a BFA and 2012 with her MFA in poetry. While participating in her Masters program, Alecia was a creative writing instructor in the Words Without Walls program, a creative partnership between Chatham University’s MFA program and the Allegheny County Jail. She continued her teaching career as a secondary teacher of creative writing and English in Winston-Salem and Greensboro, North Carolina. Throughout her teaching career, she cultivated local community-engaged partnerships with well-known artists and poets, and university professors in collaborative curriculum and instruction within and beyond classrooms with youth. She currently teaches courses across poetry, disciplinary literacies, and secondary English teaching methods. Her research is focused on literacies formed by space and place, considerations of the interconnected resonances of teachers and students, and the poetics of education.
